Can Claude make videos? Yes, here's how

Yes, Claude can absolutely make videos, and not the way you'd expect. Instead of an image generator, it writes code (HTML, CSS and JavaScript) that a browser draws frame by frame and a render pipeline turns into video. That makes it far more editable. It's brilliant for motion graphics, animated carousels, explainers and edits, and poor at generative footage. Here's how it works, which route to take, and where TopPost fits.

It's Friday afternoon. You shipped the thing this week and now you need a vertical short for tomorrow. Maybe a promo for the launch page too. Claude is the obvious thing to ask, and honestly it's better at this than you'd expect.

The surprise is how it does it. Claude doesn't need a video model, and it isn't an image generator in disguise. It writes code, and code is something it's very good at.

How can Claude make a video?

By writing the video as code. Claude writes HTML, CSS and JavaScript, the languages web pages are built from. A browser draws that code on screen, one frame at a time, and a render pipeline stitches the frames into an MP4.

At a high level it goes like this:

  1. You describe the video, and ideally give Claude a reference.
  2. Claude writes the code for each scene: the text, shapes, images and motion.
  3. A browser renders every frame, and an encoder turns the frames into a video file.
  4. You change something by asking, and Claude edits the code and renders again.

That last step is what's amazing about it. The video is just code, so it's far more editable than anything an image generator hands you. Change a headline, swap a colour, shorten a scene, and re-render. Nothing is baked into pixels.

HyperFrames and Remotion are the two frameworks people use for this. Both turn code into frames, and both work with Claude Code.

What is Claude good at, and what is it bad at?

Claude is good at anything you can build out of text, shapes, images and motion. That covers:

  • Motion graphics.
  • Animated carousels.
  • Animated slideshows and presentations.
  • Explainer videos.
  • Editing real footage, through a tool.

It's bad at generative footage. Creative cat videos, realistic people, a cinematic clip from nothing: that needs a video model, and Claude isn't one. Anthropic says as much about its own Claude Motion feature.

Two things make the difference between good and generic.

Give it references. Claude is excellent at copying a reference: a video you like, a brand page, a screenshot of a style. Show it what you want and it matches the look.

Prompt it properly. Claude has really good design sense when it's prompted well. Straight out of the gate, with a one-line request, you'll get something that looks pretty generic. That's down to the prompt, not the tool.

What are the ways to do it?

There are four routes, and they solve different problems. Pick by what you're starting from.

RouteYou start withYou getYou set up
Code rendererAn idea or dataA video built from codeNode, FFmpeg, a project
Claude MotionA prompt or dataA short animationNothing, but Team or Enterprise
Editing MCPYour own footageA cut, captioned videoA connector and an API key
Generator MCPA text promptAI-generated clipsA connector and its account

The short version: if your footage already exists, you want an editing MCP. If it doesn't and you want a motion graphic or explainer, a code renderer or Claude Motion. If you want a realistic clip out of thin air, a generator.

What should you look out for when Claude sets up a video project?

Be really careful about what it downloads. Claude is a helpful installer: ask for a video framework and it will set up the framework and then keep going, with extra packages, helper tools, plugins and config files it decided you'd need. A lot of that you never chose.

The risk goes up when the thing it's pulling in is untrusted. When a model ingests a new skill, repo or web page from somewhere online, there's a real chance it carries prompt injection: hidden instructions that steer the agent into running things you didn't ask for, including downloading yet more dependencies.

Even a trusted project does this. HyperFrames is a trusted project (it comes from HeyGen) and we think it's pretty safe, but running it still fills your machine with things you had no idea you were signing up for.

What we'd do:

  • Work in a fresh folder, a container or a spare machine, not your main project.
  • Read the plan before you approve an install. Look at who made a package or repo, how old it is and what it runs when it installs.
  • Be extra careful with skills and repos you found online.
  • Check what changed afterwards: git diff, and the package.json if there is one.
  • Keep real API keys out of the project folder.

Code pipelines also break in dull ways: blank frames, missing fonts, audio that doesn't fit the scene length. None of this makes the code route a bad idea. It makes it a project, so budget for that. We lay out the trade-offs on the TopPost vs HyperFrames page.

That's the difference with TopPost. It's just a connection. Everything happens in our cloud, so nothing gets downloaded to your machine and there's nothing extra to trust.

Can Claude generate video from a text prompt?

Yes, in code. Describe a motion graphic, an explainer or an animated slideshow and Claude writes the code that renders it. That's the route most tutorials describe.

What it can't do is generate realistic footage. For that, a generator MCP routes your request to external video models, and Claude acts as the director. Higgsfield is the one the search results keep naming. Its MCP page says Claude can generate images and video through it, with "30+ models" behind it. That's the vendor's own description, and we haven't run it. We found no pricing on that page, so check before you rely on it. TopPost doesn't do this job: we edit footage you upload, we don't create it.

What is Claude Motion, and can you use it?

Claude Motion is a beta Anthropic feature that makes short animations, and you can only use it on Team or Enterprise plans. We checked Anthropic's help page on 23 October 2026.

What the page says:

  • It turns content into short animations such as explainers, animated charts and product walkthroughs.
  • It's in beta on Team and Enterprise. On Team it's on by default. On Enterprise an owner has to switch it on first.
  • Claude builds the animation as code that moves text, charts, shapes and images. It doesn't use a video-generation model, so it can't produce realistic footage or people.
  • You edit by asking Claude, or by changing the animation directly. Export is MP4.
  • It counts towards your plan's usage limits, and longer animations use more.

Anthropic's page carries no launch date. Secondary coverage points to early October 2026, but we couldn't find Anthropic's own announcement, so treat that date as unconfirmed. It isn't on Free, Pro or Max.

In practice Motion is the code-renderer idea with the setup removed, and the clutter with it. It's a good fit for a chart or an explainer. It isn't an editor for your own recordings.

Can Claude edit my own footage?

Yes, if you give it a tool that does the editing. Claude has no timeline of its own, so what it can do to your footage is exactly what the connected tool exposes. You can do a rough version with FFmpeg, which is fiddly for anything more designed than a cut. The managed version is an editing MCP: a hosted server that gives Claude tools to upload footage, change the edit, render it and read back what happened.

Why is TopPost the best way to edit short-form video with Claude?

If you're running short-form as a marketing pipeline and you want to A/B test, TopPost is the best route we know, and yes, we're biased: we built it. For a one-off video, or an indie-hacker side project, HyperFrames is a fair choice. For a scalable, largely automated pipeline, we'd use TopPost. Here's why.

  • It's a pipeline, not just an editor. The agent edits your footage, A/B tests your best videos as trial reels and schedules the winner. It makes a batch of extra edits without you babysitting them.
  • It turns views into leads. Auto DMs send a guide when someone comments a keyword, and lead magnets (quizzes and forms) capture the people who bite. A core agent can set the whole pipeline up for you.
  • Nothing is downloaded. It's a connection to our cloud. There's no framework to set up, no dependency tree to read and nothing for Claude to pull in.
  • The agent stays on rails. It works through 45 defined tools (upload, edit, captions, render, review links and more) instead of improvising its own toolchain.
  • It starts from a style. Pick a template, or point it at one of your past videos, and it matches the look and the pacing.
  • It should use far fewer tokens. Claude is directing a handful of tools instead of writing and debugging a whole video project. We haven't measured it, so treat that as our expectation, not a number.

One thing is still on you. Connecting takes an API key, so treat that key like a password.

And the limits, so you can rule us out fast:

  • It's built for short-form: vertical 9:16 videos, up to about two minutes. It isn't a long-form tool.
  • It edits real footage you upload. It is not text-to-video, and there are no avatars.
  • It doesn't make carousels. Use the code route for those.

To connect it in Claude Code, create an API key in the app and run this:

Connect TopPost to Claude Code (create an API key first):

claude mcp add --transport http toppost https://app.toppost.ai/api/mcp --header "Authorization: Bearer <your API key>"

Any other MCP client: endpoint https://app.toppost.ai/api/mcp (streamable HTTP), header Authorization: Bearer <your API key>.

Then ask for something concrete. This is an example of what to type, not a result we've shown you:

Take the three clips I uploaded, cut them to the best 30 seconds, add captions and a title card, and render it.

If vertical shorts from your own clips is the job, create a TopPost account and connect your Claude Code. If you'd rather see it first, how it works walks through it, and the MCP page has the setup details.

Does TopPost work in claude.ai and Claude Desktop?

Not officially. TopPost's MCP is API-key only, and the chat sign-in for claude.ai and Claude Desktop isn't live.

There's a possible way around that. Anthropic's help page says custom connectors can send a fixed API key or bearer token in request headers. TopPost uses a bearer-token key, so it might work as a custom connector. We haven't tested it, so we're not saying it does. If you try it, let us know.

What does an end-to-end social workflow look like?

One batch of footage in, tested and scheduled shorts out, and leads captured on the way. Here's the loop:

  1. Film or collect the week's clips and upload them, in the app or through the MCP.
  2. Tell the agent the job once: "cut these into three vertical shorts in our usual style."
  3. TopPost renders the 9:16 videos in its cloud.
  4. Send a review link. A client or teammate comments on exact moments, and Claude reads the comments and fixes them.
  5. The agent tests versions of your best videos as trial reels and keeps the one that performs.
  6. The winner goes on the calendar and out to your accounts.
  7. Auto DMs and lead magnets turn the people who comment into leads.

That's the point of a pipeline: you set it up once and it keeps running. Claude's other talents slot in around it. It can draft captions and hooks in your voice (we cover that in Marketing with Claude), and a weekly batch is easier to keep up than editing one clip at a time, which is the argument in why batching a month of content works.

The in-app version of this loop is live. Over MCP, the editing and calendar tools exist, but we haven't run a full publish from Claude, so we don't promise that step.

Which route fits you, and what skill level do you need?

Pick by where you're starting from and how much terminal you're happy with.

You areStart withSkill neededWatch for
Just getting startedTopPost's appNone, no terminalShort-form, vertical only
Doing quick short-form editsThe TopPost MCP in Claude CodeApproving commands, one API keyTreat the key like a password
Wanting long-form or full controlHyperFrames or RemotionNode, FFmpeg, reading diffsThe clutter, so sandbox it
After realistic clipsA generator MCPAn account and creditsCost; it's a different job

If you're just getting started, TopPost is the simpler setup. There's no terminal, no weird dependencies and no technical setup at all.

If you want long-form video and you're happy with a more technical setup, HyperFrames is the one. It's open source and you can go as long as you like, but you'll wrestle with code and spend more tokens. If you're doing short-form, quick edits, TopPost gets it done faster and with fewer tokens. It only does about two minutes, but it's much easier, and it's very good at promos.

And if you're editing on CapCut on your phone today, TopPost is the closest swap. In our experience it's faster for basic talking heads, and with the MCP Claude does the edit for you. If you only edit once a month, CapCut's free plan is still fine, and we say so on our TopPost vs CapCut page.

What does it cost?

What a Claude video costs depends on the route, and "free" rarely means free.

  • Code renderers: the frameworks are open source or free to start, but Claude Code needs a paid Claude plan or API credit. MindStudio's pipeline adds ElevenLabs, which has a free tier for testing.
  • Claude Motion: no separate fee, but it uses your Team or Enterprise plan's limits.
  • Generator MCP: you pay the generator, usually in credits. Check its pricing.
  • TopPost: your own AI's edits use no TopPost credits, and storage is the charge. The app still asks for an account, so see pricing for what that costs today.

What should you do next?

Start with the smallest version for where you are. If you're new, open the app and give it three clips. If you're comfortable in a terminal, connect the MCP to Claude Code and try the same three. If you'd rather build from scratch, run a HyperFrames or Remotion project in a sandbox and see if the output is good enough.

What we can't show you yet is a full run of Claude editing footage through TopPost: the prompt, the time it took, the video. We haven't recorded one, so we haven't published one. Come back and tell us what broke, and that's how this post gets its missing proof.

Can Claude make videos? Yes, here's how: frequently asked questions

Can Claude make videos?

Yes. Claude doesn't generate video the way an image model does. It writes code (HTML, CSS and JavaScript) that a browser renders frame by frame, and a render pipeline turns the frames into a video. It can also drive a video tool over MCP, or use Claude Motion, a beta animation feature on Team and Enterprise plans.

Can Claude generate videos from a text prompt?

Yes, in code. Describe a motion graphic, explainer or animated slideshow and Claude writes the code that renders it. What it can't do is generate realistic footage, like people or creative cat videos. For that you need a generator tool, such as Higgsfield's MCP, which routes your request to external video models.

Can Claude edit videos?

Yes, through a tool. Claude Code can run FFmpeg or a code renderer on your files, or call an editing MCP like TopPost's. It has no drag-and-drop timeline of its own, so what it edits is whatever the connected tool exposes.

Can Claude Code make videos, and do I need to code?

Yes, and you don't write the code, but you do work in a terminal and approve what it runs. You need Node.js, FFmpeg or a similar toolchain and a plan that includes Claude Code. If that sounds like a lot, start with TopPost's browser app or Claude Motion instead.

Is it safe to let Claude install video tools?

It can be, if you contain it. Untrusted skills and repos can carry prompt injection, and even trusted tools install more dependencies than you expect. Use a fresh folder or a container, read what you approve, check what changed, and keep real API keys out of the project.

Can Claude make videos for free?

Partly. HyperFrames is open source (Apache 2.0), but Claude Code needs a paid Claude plan or API credit. Claude Motion isn't on Free, Pro or Max. TopPost's own-AI edits use no TopPost credits, but you pay for storage and the app currently needs an account.

Can Claude make videos for YouTube or Instagram?

It can make the video file. Code renderers output MP4s in whatever size you ask for, and TopPost outputs vertical 9:16, which suits Shorts, Reels and TikTok. TopPost also schedules posts from its calendar. We haven't run publishing over MCP, so we don't claim that part.

Can I use TopPost with claude.ai or Claude Desktop?

Officially, not yet. TopPost's MCP is API-key only and works in Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, VS Code Copilot and Gemini CLI. Anthropic's custom connectors can send a fixed API key header, so it may work in claude.ai too. We haven't tested that, so we don't claim it.
